Creating a set of Minimalistic Superhero Illustrations

When it was time to give my son’s room a new look there was no question superheroes would be involved in the design but no ordinary superhero posters would do. Instead I created unique minimalistic representations of the characters.

To ensure uniformity across all the superhero illustrations I knew that various elements of the forms had to be based on very specific rules. To do this I created a general body style, that was geometrically symmetrical and would be used as the base for all the characters. I then proceeded to make slight modifications to these body styles by adding visual attributes such as color, facial features, hair, masks, helmets and suits to create the unique look of each character.

Nearly every character I created maintained the overall proportions of the base body style, with the exception of the Hulk. Because, well… he’s the Hulk and he needed to have a larger profile, wider jaw line and be more muscular than the rest of the characters.

All in all, the end result was a huge hit with my son. The one of a kind framed superhero posters, along with other cool related items like a skyline cutout of Gotham city with a fading multi-color led light strip was enough to blow my little guy’s mind.

Now for all of you die-hard comic fans out there who will say I shouldn’t have mixed Marvel universe of characters with the DC Comics universe of characters… I agree with you. That being said, you try arguing that logic with a 7 year old boy who loves superheroes. It just wasn’t in the cards for me.

Nevertheless, I hope everyone finds these as inspiring to look at as they were for me to create. For those who would like to get their hands on some of them, ultimately my goal is to make them available for sale in various print sizes. I may even add a few more characters to the mix such as the Black Widow, Ant Man, Starlord and Grut to name a few. Check back here for news on that.
