The United States Army is the largest branch of the military. It is also one of the largest organizations in America with over a million people that make up the active duty and reserves combined. For 9 years I worked with the Army to help them visually and verbally communicate internal messages.
As with any large organization, communications is always a challenge and messages, if not carefully crafted and executed, can become misinterpreted. It was important to senior leaders that the Army be represented as not only as a force for resolving America’s conflicts but also as a peacekeeping and humanitarian armada dedicated to protecting innocent people around the world.
I worked as a sub-contractor with the Army for nearly nine years on branding and marketing as well as the production of various exhibits and permanent installations. The visuals represent here just a handful of the exhibits I was involved in both designing and providing graphic support on. These exhibits were critical in communicating various messages including the direction that the Army was moving both at home and abroad.
Careful planning and a very distinct process went into every exhibit project for the Army. No two projects were exactly the same so the discovery phase was critical to success. I often met with a diverse group of partners ranging from interactive specialists to exhibit fabricators. We worked collaboratively to clarify requirements, develop creative ideas for implementation and ultimately execute on those ideas once approved by the client. All exhibit products produced for the Army needed to be grounded within the established brands and campaigns which I was tasked with managing. During the process I provided documentation, artwork, renderings (such as those pictured on this page) and guidance on various visual and structural components within the spaces. I worked to push the most out of the budgets we were given and build upon the foundations we established year after year. The benchmark for success constantly shifted to surpass previous exhibits and I did my best to encourage the merging of both design and technology within the spaces, leveraging skills of team members who specialized in producing interactive elements. Over a period of 9 years that I supported the Army, I provided art and creative direction for more than 20 unique exhibit designs and installations some of which occupied over 5400 square feet of exhibit space.
